Berbers work in teams
Imlil, High Atlas Mountains

Among the Ait Mizane, a Berber tribe in the High Atlas mountains, work is cooperative and rotative. In what is called touiza ("ta-WEE-za"), people come together to help each other; many hands make light work. But there is more than that.

Underlying the agricultural system of the Ait Mizane--their very lives is the crops they grow--are the terraced mountain fields and the irrigation system they have developed. For certain tasks, such as repairing the rock walls that face the terraced fields, a given time is set aside for their annual repair.

Here you see some men working together to repair a rock wall on the side of a terraced field.
