The women in the center of this image are vegetable sellers in the weekly market, or suq, of Boulmane, a town on the Saharan side of the High Atlas mountains. They are selling potatoes, carrots, onions, and squash. It is likely that they are selling produce from their family's fields near Boulmane. A man is about to buy from them, and may well have bargained hard over the price. Boulmane is located along a line which divides Arabic from Berber speakers. It is an area where both Arabs and Berbers coincide, so it is quite mixed. -See the language map for the division between Arabic and Berber in Morocco. Which language covers a greater area? -Which language is the language of two-thirds of the Moroccan population? -Consider this: the language map may be deceptive at first glance. Although it looks like Berber-speakers occupy more than half of Morocco, ask yourself, where are there concentrations of population in Morocco? |
