Agribusiness near Phoenix (and throughout Arizona) has reached levels that rival and in some cases exceed anything seen in California. This canal diverts water that was brought from the Colorado River, through the Central Arizona Project, to fields in one of the most urbanized locales in the West. Yet Arizona is also suffering an urban water crisis, and this water, luxuriated upon fields, is also claimed by city people, who vastly outnumber the farmers. The conflict will not soon end, although the dams and huge irrigation projects are by and large features of the past.
