Chaco Canyon has been a site of immense interests to archaeologist and tourists for some time, but it has also been a sacred site of considerable renown to Indians whose ancestors lived there. The National Park Service, of the Department of the Interior, has not until the last decade been entirely sure how such sites should be treated, especially since some parts of the site are Indian-owned. The response now is to name Chaco a "National Historical Park," which allow the Park Service to contribute some monies to upkeep and maintenance, but leaving much of the Park under Indian control.
