Cheatgrass is an exotic species, introduced from eastern Russia around the turn of this century, but one that has proved exceptionally hearty and effective in holding its ground and actually invading areas where native plants are weakened. Such weakening can occur under the effects of sustained overgrazing by livestock, especially sheep, or from episodic drought, or because of a broad change of land use regimen. Cheatgrass is considered especially noxious, because, despite its early growth and virulent color, it is not used by livestock as feed because it dries out quickly, with its surface annual-grass roots. So it pulls up easily, and tastes terrible.
