The regularity of the township and range survey system is amply demonstrated in this billboard map, showing the counties of Kansas. Townships, amounting to 36 sections of 640 acres each, were the building blocks of much of the American West, thanks to the rectangular land survey system. As a form of land survey, it was quick and replicable, but ecologically it was as inappropriate as it was insenstive and ecologically destructive.
