Manti is one of the small towns in the Sanpete Valley of Utah that was settled by Mormons (adherents of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) in the second pulse, after the Salt Lake Valley was colonized. The Sanpete Valley, with its pearls-on-a-string series of small town settlements, remains an almost perfect distillation of Mormon ideals, and Manti is a suitable example, including its Mormon Temple (a fine and early example), its irrigation ditches running through town, and the quiet and fervent urban nature. Since Mormons believed, early on, in communal living, they were given to nucleated towns, with everyone living in the cities instead of settling on agricultural land. The settlement was therefore concentrated.
