Flooded road
Palo Duro Canyon, Texas (1987)
Episodic floods are very much a part of the geomorphology and history of the American West. This flash flood across a road running through Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Panhandle of Texas is typical of one of the major impediments to travel and movement that crop up from time to time. In this case, the waters came up and stayed up for five days, accompanied by rains, tornadoes above the canyon rim, hailstorms, and other hazards. Even today, it is no simple matter to go from place to place, and such events are a perpetual threat.
