Roadside graveyard
northern New Mexico (1987)
The customs of the Hispanos, the Spanish-identifying residents of Northern New Mexico, are much derived from Old World practice, instead of the activities of the Latin America-oriented Hispanics who are so prominent elsewhere through the Sunbelt. Among the distinctive customs in Northern New Mexico are elaborate graveyards; partly oriented toward memorializing the deceased, but also pointed toward the memories of the living. This graveyard is full of just such imagery.
