100th Meridian
Central, South Dakota (1983)
The Hundredth Meridian has long served as the almost definitive guideline for anyone wanting to approximate where the West begins. East of the 100th meridian, it is generally thought that there is water enough for unirrigated crops to grow. West of the 100th meridian, irrigation and arid lands cultivation techniques are called for. Yet this has not always been thought the case, as the somewhat sarcastic commentary of this sign suggests.
