While irrigation ditches proliferate around the American West, they are especially notable in the Southwest, where Mormon and Hispanic farming styles alike emphasize the virtue and necessity of controlling water in an effective and apparent manner. This ditch, near Orchard City, Colorado, is a prime example. The water runs clear and fast, and is delivered with considerable efficiency to the claimants along the ditch. Access to the water is handled by the elected ditch- or water-master, who governs the flow and adjudicates any disputes.
