Sandhills longhorn
Ft. Niobrara, Nebraska (1986)
The Sandhill country of Nebraska, a vast area of sand long overgrown by grasses usually more typical of the tall grass prairie, is a residue of the Pleistocene glaciation of the Great Plains region. It is phenomenal cattle country, and special laws were actually promulgated by Congress to make settlement of the sandhills by stock owners more economically and politically feasible. This rather splendid example of a longhorn cow is hardly typical of native animals in the sandhills; they would have been buffalo country. But for a variety of reasons, the longhorn is an attractive alternative to the buffalo, if not quite so thrifty and vigorous.
