No Hunting or Woodcutting
Jemez Caldera, New Mexico (1991)
"No Hunting or Wood Cutting," reads a sign not far from Los Alamos, New Mexico, home to the University of California and the Department of Energy-maintained Los Alamos Lab, among the nation's main weapons testing and energy development labs. Ironically, this sign has provided much affront to people who have been resident in the area for much longer than the scientists, soldiers, and sojourners who come with the Lab. Hunting and wood cutting have been a long-standing land use virtually taken by granted by those who maintain a near-subsistence economy in the area, and who do not have access to federal payroll dollars. The sign, often chainsawed-down, torched, shot, or otherwise defaced, is in its multiple incarnation. The imposition of Federal rules is not always accepted with grace and resignation by locals.
