Oil and grain
Weld county, Colorado (1986)
This derrick pumping in the center of a field on the edges of the Great Plains in Colorado is by no means untypical; Colorado and Kansas are vast repositories of oil and natural gas that is sometimes difficult to reach, but still there. The mixing of economies in the American West is quite typical of this; dry farming along with gas, livestock and irrigated farming, mining and logging.
