Paria Canyon
Paria Canyon, Utah, Utah (1987)
Used by a movie set for a whole range of tawdry and low-budget westerns in the 1940s, Paria Canyon now lies between Kanab, Utah, and Page, Arizona. Page has been described by author Edward Abbey as "the shithead capital of Arizona," and Kanab fared little better in his personal constellation of places. That said, this remains a charming example of the recreations enclave in the American West, a small washed-away town, by and large, with false-front buildings that have survived largely because it rarely rains. The road to Paria, leading north off the Kanab-Page highway, is worth a look for its old-west aura.
