Those ferry boats cross the Baia de Guanabara in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The service goes from Rio de Janeiro city to Niterói city since 1835. It takes between 12 to 18 minutes to cross the 5 kilometers and carry around 75.000 people everyday. You can also cross teh Bay by car using a long bridge that is 13,7 km long.
