Built to commemorate the visit of King George V to Bombay in 1911, the Gateway of India was designed as a symbol British Imperial Power. Ironically it was also the point from where the last of the British troops left Independent India in 1948.

The Gateway is present day Mumbai's most famous monument. It is also the starting point of tourist boat rides around the Mumbai harbor and to the famous Elephanta Caves.
